Hersonissos - Crete Travel Guide

Beautiful beaches, great nightlife and ancient history.

An idyllic spot with a great beach club and excellent restaurants, bars and clubs.

•Hersonissos Relax on soft sand beaches, dive into warm crystal waters or simply explore the beautiful countryside on horseback. Hersonissos has a mood or mode for everyone. There is a busy harbour with fishing boats and friendly tavernas, a lovely old town of narrow streets and Greek restaurants. Plus the surrounding mountains are dotted with ancient villages, olive groves and pretty flowers. Hersonissos is a fantastic mix of Greece; ancient and modern. You can find simple beach cafes serving grilled fish fresh from the sea and enjoy the centuries old tradition of a simple supper at sunset with good wine and good friends. Or you can hit the popular bars and cafes around the harbour before hitting the dance floor at trendy Amnesia nightclub and partying all night.

•Hersonissos is ideal for everyone, there are hotels catering for the young party crowd, as well as family friendly All Inclusive resorts. Plus, there are those who use Hersonissos as a base for exploring the history of the surrounding area. Definitely a place to check out at least once on your holiday.

Did you know? Old Hersonissos was built inland on a hill following many pirate attacks by Saracen and others on the original port of Hersonissos. The advantage of the hillside was that it gave the locals enough time to react to pirate attacks. Later, from the 1950s onwards, a resort developed closer to the original port which embraced tourism as people started to visit the area to see all the archaeological remains near Hersonissos, Malia and Heraklion.
