Alicante - Costa Blanca Travel Guide

Alicante is a charming authentic Spainsh city surrounded by white sand beaches- a farcry from the generic tourist resort.

Located between mountains and sea, Alicante's unique location, comfortable climate, and year round beach culture make it a brilliant place to enjoy a holiday in the sun.

•During recent years, Alicante's seafront has been continually improved. The presentation of the city, its tree-lined boulevards, new harbour complex, and beaches are now more attractive than ever.

•Beaches: There are more than seven different beaches in and around Alicante. Located alongside the port, El Postiguet Beach is within walking distance of most hotels. This white sand beach is one of Alicante's main attractions and is the perfect place to relax in the sun.

•Weather: Alicante’s weather is as close to perfect as you get with an average temperature of 32c in summer and 16c in winter. It is not uncommon to find people sunbathing in October and during the hottest months, what can be quite intense heat is buffered by a pleasant sea breeze.

•Dining in Alicante: Good eating is guaranteed in Alicante, with a wide selection of high quality restaurants serving local specialties, fresh seafood, Mediterranean dishes, all at great value. Alicante is famous for high quality rice dishes which really must be tasted to be appreciated. Paellas of various styles such as arroz de mero y gambas (rice with prawns and grouper) or arroz de magro (rice with meat and vegetables) are popular favorites. If you plan to sample the region’s famous Paella, make sure you allow an extra half hour or so for your meal to arrive (a small price to pay for the freshness and quality you are sure to receive).

•Shopping in Alicante: With specialist shops selling local handicrafts, art, and other souvenirs, interspersed with fashionable designer shops, and a ridiculous number of shoe shops, shoppers will run riot.

•The Castle of Sant Barbara sits atop the Benacantill mountain overlooking Alicante City. The castle is lit up at night and dominates the skyline. The castle was built in the ninth century by the Moors. It is definitely worth visiting the castle, if only for the stunning views of the city and sea.

•Tabarca Island: A visit to the island of Tabarca, 11 miles of the coast of Alicante, makes for a very enjoyable day trip. The island is a marine reserve and a day spent swimming in the clear waters of the island is highly recommended. The island’s restaurants are all very good. You can catch a boat over to Tabarca from a variety of different locations on the Alicante seafront.

•El Barrio: Alicante’s old quarter (El Barrio), is defined by narrow medieval streets and is presided over by the Town Hall and Cathedral of San Nicholas de Bari. At night this area is particularly attractive and you’ll find lively nightlife going on in any of the areas bars and eateries.

•Museu de Arte de Siglo: Alicante’s modern art museum is home to the works of many famous artists including Dali, Picasso, Kandinski, and Giacometti. The museum can be found opposite the Sant Maria Church and entry is free of charge.

•La Explanada: This palm-tree lined promenade inlaid with colorful marble is Alicante’s central attraction. Locals and tourists alike come here for a leisurely stroll and to enjoy the many shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and shops that line the street.
